Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Alice Omaggio Hadley obtained her undergraduate degree in education at Penn State University in 1969. She then did her graduate work at Ohio State University, where she obtained an M.A. in Romance Languages and Literatures and a Ph.D. in Foreign Language Education. After finishing her doctorate, she worked for two years at the ERIC Clearinghouse on Languages and Linguistics. She then taught for one year at the University of New Mexico before coming to the University of Illinois in 1980.

Professor Hadley retired from the Department of French in May 2005.
