Maggie Flinn (Ph.D. Harvard University 2005) is an Assistant Professor of French and of Media and Cinema Studies. Her research focuses on film, art and politics as intersecting cultural discourses. She is currently completing a book entitled The Social Architecture of French Cinema, 1929-39. In 2007, Professor Flinn was awarded a fellowship to spend a semester at the Camargo Foundation in Cassis, France in order to work on this project, which examines the construction, representation and experience of cinematographic spaces and places. Her next book project, tentatively titled New Limits of the Real: Arts of the Moving Image and the Politics of the Contemporary Everyday, will address the rising value of documentary film/media and of commodified heritage or history as indices of a national cinema in transition, under pressure from the European Union, globalization and technological change.
Professor Flinn has co-edited two special issues of journals: "Ce que le cinéma fait à la littérature (et réciproquement)," Fabula: Littérature Histoire, Théorie, with Jean-Louis Jeannelle (Université de Paris IV-Sorbonne); and "The New Wave at 50," Contemporary French Civilization, with Ludovic Cortade (New York University).
She has written articles on Jean-Louis Boissier, Chris Marker, the film theory of Elie Faure, and women in North African cinema for journals such as SubStance, Studies in French Cinema and Yale French Studies. She has also contributed to Intellect’s forthcoming Directory of World Film: France, edited by Tim Palmer and Charlie Michael. Her seminars and graduate courses include "Space and Place in French film pre-1950," "Cinema and the other arts: 1950-the present," "Afriques-sur-Seine: Franco-African Cinematic Encounters," "New Map, New Media" and most recently, “French Graphisms: Bande dessinée, Graphic Novel and Animated Cinema.”
